WHY PEOPLE WHO DON’T COMPETE ARE MORE MOTIVATED AND SUCCESSFUL
By Shahzalina Ghazali
It's a common mistake to assume that human likes to compete and that competition in life is always healthy.
While it can sometimes be productive, too much competition can be destructive and harmful to yourself and people around you. The excessive desire to compete for breeds envy and jealousy.
Envy is a prohibited attribute in Islam and Allah SWT commanded us to seek protection from Allah SWT from the evils of envy. Allah ‘Azza wa Jalla state:
وَمِن شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ
“And from the evil of an envier when he envies."
~Surah al-Falaq (5)
The Prophet PBUH said:
إِيَّاكُمْ وَالْحَسَدَ فَإِنَّ الْحَسَدَ يَأْكُلُ الْحَسَنَاتِ كَمَا تَأْكُلُ النَّارُ الْحَطَبَ
“Avoid envy, for envy devours good deeds just as fire devours firewood.”
~Sunan Abi Dawud (4903)
However, there is a hadith that state an exception in being envy or jealous. The Prophet PBUH said:
ضِي بِهَا وَيُعَلِّمُهَا الْحِكْمَةَ، فَهْوَ يَقْلاَ حَسَدَ إِلاَّ فِي اثْنَتَيْنِ رَجُلٌ آتَاهُ اللَّهُ مَالاً فَسُلِّطَ عَلَى هَلَكَتِهِ فِي الْحَقِّ، وَرَجُلٌ آتَاهُ اللَّهُ
"Do not wish to be like anyone except in two cases. (The first is) A person, whom Allah has given wealth and he spends it righteously; (the second is) the one whom Allah has given wisdom (the Holy Qur'an) and he acts according to it and teaches it to others."
~Sahih al-Bukhari (73)
That is why people who don't have the heart to compete have advantages in life and more opportunities to be successful.
Here are some reasons why those people who don't compete are more motivated and successful in their chosen field and life.
1. They are not ego-driven
People who compete often do so to satisfy their ego. If you don’t have the heart to compete, it means you don’t have a big ego and that’s a huge advantage. You won’t be wasting so much time to satisfy your need to compete.
2. They’re less stressed
Admit it, competition in life adds a lot of unnecessary stress and frustration. It has an overwhelmingly negative influence on your sense of self and takes a lot of energy away from your body, mind and soul.
3. They hold less jealousy in their hearts
If you don’t have the heart to compete, you are probably less concerned with trivial matters. The lack of jealousy allows you to make good decisions, not only for you but also for others.
4. They wish success on others.
The person who doesn’t obsess about competition often wants others to be successful as well. They don’t mind wishing other people who attain success.
5. They believe success can be shared.
Competitions are always win-lose situations. People who don’t compete believe in win-win scenarios. Instead of outsmarting other people, they team up and double the chances for success.
6. They’re calmer and have inner peace
When there’s no need to compete, there will be less stress and people who are less stressed are much calmer. They are also healthier. By focusing on improving yourself instead of beating others, you are well on your way to the inner peace that everyone craves. Unbeknownst to most, the real way to fill the emptiness in their hearts to live and let live, removing competition from life as they can.
